Lynn Goldstein on our last trip
Join Lynn as she helps you to concentrate on creating compelling paintings using innovative techniques, experimenting with color, and interpreting the landscape through shape and pattern. Learn how to simplify the vast natural beauty of Italy and find the perfect subjects to paint or draw. This workshop is designed for beginners as well as advanced students, and the methods can be applied to both representational and/or abstract landscape drawings and/or paintings. Lynn will be demonstrating in acrylic, but you may use the medium of your choice. The week-long workshop will be a combination of outdoor sketching and painting, studio time, and excursions to visit the area.
Topics to be covered:
- At least three ways to start a painting contingent on your
medium of choice
- Methods to improve compositions
- Ways to feel more confident altering what is seen to
enhance your art
- Strategies to ensure color harmony
Class Tour Focus: Painting, drawing, relaxing, and immersing in another culture. I feel strongly that spending time in a different culture and seeing new things sparks inspiration. Therefore, I would suggest that we spend time making art, but also spend time immersing ourselves in the culture. As a tour leader at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery for over 20 years, I love sharing my insight into artwork that we encounter while on tours.
Day 1:
Simplify forms in your sketches and then use those sketches to make your painting.
Day 2:
Compositional considerations still be thinking about simplification.
Day 3:
Look at simplifying color palettes: Some successful limited color palettes
Day 4:
Do your own thing
Day 5:
Do your own thing or abstraction.
Day 6:
Visit some landscape beauty
Day 7:
Critique of work done by students in the past and what has been produced during the week.
Our Accommodations: Agriturismo Cavazzone is located in the small town of Viano, outside of Reggio nel Emilia. It is owned and managed by my dear friend Umberto Sidoli, who also owns the Hotel Posta in town. At Cavazzone, we will be fortunate to have many vistas from which to paint, including from the gazebo, pictured above. In addition to the painting schedule, we’ll have a demonstration of the balsamic production and a cooking lesson. We’ll go into Reggio for the farmers market, which will give you ample opportunity for sketching and/or photos.

Lynn Goldstein
Instructor & Tour Guide
Virginia based abstract landscape painter, Lynn Goldstein enjoys telling people that one of her first jobs was working in the art department of Ringling Brothers & Barnum and Bailey Circus. She was employed as a graphic designer for seventeen years, but painting was never far from her mind. Since leaving graphic design work behind, Goldstein has exhibited widely, winning awards, in nationally juried exhibitions and galleries. Her work is enjoyed in private and public collections throughout the United States and Europe, including the United States Securities and Exchange Commission, the Schar Cancer Institute, the Lorton Library in Fairfax County, Virginia, and the United States Department of State.
Notably, one of her paintings was selected for the permanent collection in the Jean-Haffen Museum in Dinan, France, upon her completion of an artist residency there. Lynn was one of fifteen American artists selected to participate in the Caravan multi-cultural and international art project which took place at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in NYC. Her installation work exploring her Jewish roots was selected for exhibition at the Smithsonian S Dillon Ripley Center in Washington, D.C. in 2015, and a different piece was selected for display there in 2017.
Lynn is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America. Lynn is a juried member of the prestigious Washington Society of Landscape Painters. She is also a juried member of the Torpedo Factory Art Center, and a juried resident artist at the Workhouse Arts Center where she has her studio. Lynn has taught many workshops in the mid-Atlantic region, Southern France, Portugal, and in Italy. Lynn has also taught workshop classes at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, where she volunteered her time as a docent for over two decades. This experience has allowed Lynn to study, understand, and pass on the best of America’s art masterpieces.

Joan Hill
Owner, Host & Director
In 2008, the seed of Artful Journeys was planted in her brain, when Joan brought together all of her life's passions, her love of music, an affinity for the beautiful things in life, and an ability to organize events to give birth to Artful Journeys, a program of art education trips for the soul.
Joan was born and raised in the apple country of the Hudson River Valley in New York; her father was a gentle, very tolerant, educated land surveyor, and her mother was the efficient business administrator and home engineer. The youngest of four children, Joan was encouraged to pursue anything she wanted, but also to do her best. Sometimes that was very difficult, especially succeeding three very accomplished siblings.
