Join Lynn as we concentrate on creating compelling paintings using innovative techniques, experimenting with color, and interpreting the landscape through shape and pattern. Learn how to simplify the vast natural beauty of Portugal and find the perfect subjects to paint or draw. This workshop is designed for beginners as well as advanced students, and the methods can be applied to both representational and/or abstract landscape drawings and/or paintings, using soft pastel or water-mixable oil.

The week-long workshop will be a combination of outdoor sketching and painting, studio time and excursions to visit the area.

Lynn and a student

There will be plenty of painting time, personal instruction, and group critiques to promote your progress.  Lynn will be doing demonstrations in a variety of media, and students may use pastels, acrylics or water-mixable oils if they wish. Students will learn at least three ways to start a painting, new methods to improve compositions, and feel more confident altering what you see to enhance your art–all in an amazing setting! In case of inclement weather, we will work inside. We will end the week with a farewell dinner. A detailed itinerary will be furnished upon registration.

From Lynn

“I feel strongly that spending time in a different culture and seeing new things sparks inspiration. Therefore, I would suggest that we spend time making art, but also spend time immersing ourselves in the culture. As a tour leader at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery for over 20 years, I love sharing my insight into artwork that we encounter while on tours.”

Lynn Goldstein
Instructor

Lynn has taught many workshops in the mid-Atlantic region, Tuscany, Italy, and Southern France. Lynn teaches workshop classes at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, where she volunteers her time as a docent, and has for two decades. This experience has allowed Lynn to study, understand, and pass on the best of America’s art masterpieces. This understanding is clearly embedded in her art as well.

Northern Virginia artist Lynn Goldstein has been making art professionally for twenty-five years. First employed as a graphic designer and illustrator before following her passion for painting, Lynn’s work in pastel and other mixed-media has brought her national and international acclaim, particularly for her colorful expressive landscapes.

She has exhibited widely, winning awards, in nationally juried exhibitions and galleries, and her work is enjoyed in private and public collections throughout the United States and Europe. Notably, one of her paintings was selected for the permanent collection in the Jean Haffen Museum, Dinan, France, upon her completion of an artist residency in 2011. Additionally, Lynn was one of fifteen American artists selected to participate in the Caravan multi-cultural and international art project which took place at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in NYC in the fall of 2014. Most recently, her work was selected for exhibition at the Smithsonian S. Dillon Ripley Center in Washington, D.C. twice; first in 2015 and also in 2017.

A fine art graduate from West Virginia University, Lynn has studied with some of the finest contemporary artists in the United States. She has earned signature membership in the Maryland Pastel Society and membership in the Pastel Society of America. Her popular classes have brought her awards as an outstanding instructor from Fairfax County, VA. Very much the teacher, Lynn wrote a feature article published in Pastel Journal encouraging artists to look at their work from a different perspective.

Her work has been exhibited at the National Arts Club in New York City, Koehnline Museum of Art in Des Plaines, Ill, Eleven Pleasant Street Gallery in Kennebunk, ME, and at the Palette & Chisel Academy of Fine Arts in Chicago, IL, among other locations. Additionally, her work was profiled in the August 2009 issue of Pastel Journal. More of Lynn’s work can be seen by looking at her website.

In 2008, the seed of Artful Journeys was planted in her brain, when Joan brought together all of her life's passions - her love of music, an affinity for the beautiful things in life, and an ability to organize events - to give birth to Artful Journeys, a program of art education trips for the soul.

Joan was born and raised in the apple country of the Hudson River Valley in New York; her father was a gentle, very tolerant, educated land surveyor, and her mother was the efficient business administrator and home engineer. The youngest of four children, Joan was encouraged to pursue anything she wanted, but also to do her best. Sometimes that was difficult, especially
succeeding three very accomplished siblings.
